Amparo lies in the hilly interior of São Paulo state, in the Serra da Mantiqueira foothills. The town grew during the coffee era of the nineteenth century, and its historic centre still keeps many buildings from that period. On a map the streets adapt to the hills: some blocks keep a rough grid, while others curve with the slopes and the course of the Camanducaia River.
Amparo is part of the Circuito das Águas Paulista, a group of towns known for mineral springs, mild climate and green hills that draw weekend visitors from São Paulo and Campinas. Farms and patches of woodland surround the town, and country roads wind away between them.
