Roman grid
The historic centre keeps the rectangular plan of Augusta Praetoria, with straight streets and the course of the walls still clearly visible, one of the best-preserved Roman layouts in the Alps.

Aosta Map Poster & Print
Aosta lies in the Aosta Valley, in the far north-west of Italy, surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the Alps. The Romans founded it as Augusta Praetoria in 25 BC, and its map still reflects that origin: the historic centre is a clear rectangular grid enclosed by the line of the Roman walls, with streets crossing at right angles.
Many Roman structures survive within and around this grid, including the Porta Praetoria gate, the Arch of Augustus just beyond it and the remains of a large theatre. The Dora Baltea runs along the southern side of the city, and roads lead up the valley toward the Mont Blanc and Great St Bernard routes into France and Switzerland.
An Aosta map poster brings together two very different forms: the precise Roman rectangle at the centre and the natural lines of river, valley and mountain slopes around it. Newer districts spread along the valley floor, while the hillsides, with their villages and switchback roads, give the composition depth and movement.

Porta Praetoria
The main Roman gate stands on the eastern side of the old town, with the Arch of Augustus a short distance beyond it along the same axis.
Dora Baltea
The river runs along the valley floor south of the centre, a curving line that contrasts with the geometric Roman streets and frames the city.
