Badgām Map Poster
Badgām lies a short distance southwest of Srinagar on the broad floor of the Kashmir Valley and is the headquarters of the district that shares its name. From above, the town is a loose arrangement of streets and lanes that fade into irrigated fields, orchards and villages. The land rises gradually toward the Pir Panjal range on the southwestern horizon.
The surrounding district is known for its karewas, flat-topped terraces of old lake sediment that step up from the valley floor. On a map they show as areas where the network of small roads changes texture, and streams cut channels between them. Srinagar's airport lies within Budgam district, so this is also where many visitors first land in the valley.
The name also carries history. In November 1947 the Battle of Badgām was fought near the town, and Major Somnath Sharma was posthumously awarded India's first Param Vir Chakra for his actions there. Close to the centre, narrow lanes branch between houses, orchards and fields. They form an irregular web that contrasts with the straighter main roads heading toward Srinagar.
Pir Panjal edge
To the southwest the valley rises toward the Pir Panjal range. In a wider framing, the thinning of roads toward the slopes marks where farmland gives way to mountain.
