Beaufort West lies in the Great Karoo, the vast semi-desert interior of South Africa's Western Cape. On the map, the town is a tidy grid of streets set in open, arid country, with the Nuweveld Mountains rising to the north. The N1 national highway runs straight through the middle as the main street, the town's spine and the reason for much of its traffic.
Founded in 1818, Beaufort West is one of the oldest towns in the Karoo and became South Africa's first municipality in 1837. The heart surgeon Christiaan Barnard was born and grew up here. Just outside town, the Karoo National Park protects the plains and escarpment landscapes that surround it.
