Beloha lies in the Androy region, in the far south of Madagascar, one of the driest parts of the island. The town is modest in size. On a map it appears as a small cluster of streets and compounds where a few rural roads meet, surrounded by a very wide expanse of open country.
The Androy region is home to the Antandroy people, whose name is often translated as people of the thorns. The name refers to the spiny forest and dry scrub that cover much of the landscape. Rainfall is low and irregular, and the region has faced repeated droughts, which shape both farming and the pattern of settlement.
Small villages and hamlets appear across the surrounding land, linked to Beloha by tracks that run long and straight or curve gently over the terrain.
