Bima lies on the island of Sumbawa in Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara province, near the inner end of Bima Bay. The bay is the defining shape on any map of the city: a narrow arm of the sea reaching deep into the land, almost enclosed, with the harbour and the older town gathered on its shore. Hills rise behind the streets, holding the city close to the water.
For centuries this was the seat of the Sultanate of Bima, a trading state on the sea routes of eastern Indonesia. The former sultan's palace, the Asi Mbojo, stands near the centre and now serves as a museum. The city grew outward from this old core toward the harbour and the markets, and later along the roads leading around the bay.
Sumbawa is also the island of Mount Tambora, whose 1815 eruption was among the largest in recorded history, though the volcano stands well to the west of the city.
