Brant is a single-tier municipality in south-western Ontario, surrounding but separate from the city of Brantford. Its map is largely rural, divided by the long rectangular concession roads and lot lines that shaped land surveys across the province, and dotted with small communities such as Paris, St. George and Burford.
The Grand River crosses the county from north to south, winding through a wooded valley that stands out clearly against the regular farmland. In Paris the Nith River joins the Grand, and the town's historic centre sits at that confluence, known for its cobblestone buildings made of local fieldstone.
The municipality is named after Joseph Brant, the Mohawk leader who led Haudenosaunee people to settle along the Grand River in the late eighteenth century.
