Cabeceiras de Basto lies in northern Portugal, in the green, hilly country of the Terras de Basto in the district of Braga. From above, the town centre occupies a valley floor, while roads wind upward in all directions through terraced fields, woods and scattered villages. To the north the ground rises toward the Serra da Cabreira, and the map grows lighter and more rural.
At the centre stands the Monastery of São Miguel de Refojos, whose baroque church and large domed silhouette dominate the town. The streets gather around it, making it the clear focal point of the plan.
