Calulo is the seat of the Libolo municipality in Angola's Kwanza Sul province, set in the uplands east of the coastal plain. From above, the town follows the terrain. Roads bend to find gentler slopes, and the built area stretches along ridges and valley floors rather than spreading evenly. Green hills and small streams surround it on every side.
The Libolo area has long been associated with coffee growing, and the landscape around Calulo reflects farming rather than industry. The town is also known across Angola for its football club, Recreativo do Libolo, which has competed at the top of the national league.
