Chascomús lies on the pampas south of Buenos Aires, on the shore of the Laguna de Chascomús, a broad shallow lake that is part of a chain of lagoons in the region. From above, the town is almost defined by the water: the grid of streets runs up to the shoreline, and a lakeside road follows the curve of the lagoon.
The town was founded in 1779 as a frontier fort, and it later became one of the older settlements of Buenos Aires province. The plan shows the typical Argentine grid, with square blocks laid out around a central plaza and quintas and farmland beyond. Chascomús is popular for rowing, fishing and weekend visits from the capital.
