Cork is Ireland's second city, and its map begins with the River Lee. Just west of the centre the river splits into two channels, and the heart of the city lies on the island between them. On that island, St Patrick's Street sweeps in a long curve, following the line of a channel that was once open water. Bridges cross both arms of the river at short intervals.
North of the river, the ground rises steeply to Shandon, where the tower of St Anne's Church, known for its bells, looks over the city. The south side climbs more gently toward residential districts and the university. The English Market, a covered food market trading since the eighteenth century, sits right in the centre. Downstream, the Lee widens toward Cork Harbour.
