Gavleån river
The river runs through the middle of the city toward the sea, crossed by several bridges and lined with parks, giving the centre a clear east–west axis.

Gävle Map Poster & Print
Gävle lies where the Gavleån river meets the Gulf of Bothnia, north of Stockholm. It received its town charter in 1446, making it the oldest town in Norrland. After a major fire in 1869, the centre was rebuilt with broad, straight streets and esplanades, and that planned grid still defines the map on both sides of the river.
South of the river, Gamla Gefle survived the fire and keeps a small area of low wooden houses along narrow, winding lanes. On the map this district stands out as a patch of irregular texture beside the orderly blocks. To the east, the river widens into a harbour and the coast breaks into inlets, islands and port basins.
Gävle is widely known for its straw goat, raised in Slottstorget each Advent since 1966 and famous for how often it has been set on fire. The city also has a large port and, to the south, the Furuvik amusement park and zoo. A Gävle map poster puts the river, the grid and the coast into one balanced composition.

Post-fire grid
Wide streets and tree-lined esplanades laid out after the 1869 fire form a regular grid on both banks, a clean, spacious pattern that prints with unusual clarity.
Gamla Gefle
The surviving old quarter south of the river is a small cluster of narrow lanes and wooden houses, visible as a finer, less regular pattern next to the grid.
