Graaff-Reinet, founded in 1786, is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, and its setting is one of the clearest on any map. The Sundays River loops around the town in a tight horseshoe bend, so the historic centre is almost enclosed by water on three sides, with the mountains of the Karoo rising beyond.
Inside the bend the streets form a regular grid, broad enough for the ox-wagons of the town's early years. Many historic buildings survive, including the large Dutch Reformed church at the head of the main street, and the town has more heritage-listed buildings than almost anywhere else in the country.
A Graaff Reinet map poster captures the whole relationship between town and landscape. Camdeboo National Park surrounds the town, including the Valley of Desolation, where dolerite columns look over the plains.
