Lambaré lies just south of Asunción, part of the continuous urban area along the eastern bank of the Paraguay River. From above, its streets form a mostly regular grid. The grid bends and breaks where it meets the hill of Cerro Lambaré and the low, marshy land along the river. Main avenues run straight into the capital, and in places the boundary between the two is hard to see.
Cerro Lambaré is the city's landmark: a wooded hill topped by a monument to Cacique Lambaré, the Guaraní chief whose name the city carries. The summit gives wide views over the river and the bay of Asunción. To the west, the river and its floodplain form the national border with Argentina and a broad natural edge to the map.
