Lörrach lies in the far southwest corner of Germany, in the valley of the Wiese, a river that flows south into the Rhine at Basel. On a map the town fills the valley floor, with the Black Forest foothills rising to the north and east, and its southern edge running directly into the built-up area of Switzerland.
The Wiese runs through the town as a clear, straight line, with roads and the valley railway beside it. The centre is compact, with a pedestrian core and a pattern of streets that grew mainly during the nineteenth-century textile industry. Residential districts climb the slopes on both sides of the valley in terraced curves.
