Mala lies on Peru's central coast, south of Lima in the province of Cañete, close to where the Mala River reaches the Pacific. From above, the landscape splits cleanly in two: a green strip of irrigated fields along the river, and dry, pale desert on either side. The town sits where these meet, near the coastal highway.
The river valley has long been farmed, and it is known in the region for fruit growing, especially apples, which are celebrated at a local festival. On a map, the town centre forms a compact grid around a main square, while field boundaries and irrigation channels spread out across the valley in a looser, organic pattern.
