Māndvi lies on the southern coast of Kutch in Gujarat, where the Rukmavati River reaches the Gulf of Kutch. The map is shaped by water on two sides. The river estuary cuts along the town's edge, and to the south a long, straight beach faces the open sea. Between them, the old town is a tight mesh of narrow lanes that loosens into newer districts inland.
For centuries Māndvi was an important port for trade across the Arabian Sea to Arabia and East Africa. It is still known for building wooden dhows by hand along the riverbank, a tradition carried on in the same yards for generations. Near the coast stands the Vijay Vilas Palace, built as a summer residence for the rulers of Kutch.
