Muriaé lies in the Zona da Mata of south-eastern Minas Gerais, a region of steep green hills and narrow valleys near the borders of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. From above the city is squeezed into the valley of the river that shares its name. Streets run along the water, and neighbourhoods climb up the side valleys.
The river has always shaped life here, sometimes painfully. Heavy summer rains have flooded low-lying districts more than once. Muriaé is a regional centre for commerce, health care and education, and it has a well-known clothing industry, especially for women's fashion.
