Ontinyent is the main town of the Vall d'Albaida, in the south of the Valencia region. The Clariano river shapes its map. The river cuts a deep channel through the town, and several bridges cross it. The historic quarter, known as La Vila, sits on higher ground on one bank, its tight lanes set around the parish church of Santa Maria.
Across the river, the town grew outwards in more regular blocks, a period of expansion driven by the town's long textile tradition. Beyond the built-up area, the valley is lined with hills and farmland. Upstream lies the Pou Clar, a series of natural pools in a rocky stretch of the river, much loved by local people.
