Schwarzenberg lies in the Ore Mountains of Saxony, in the valley of the Schwarzwasser. The old town stands on a rocky spur above the river, crowned by the castle and the Church of St George. It is often called the pearl of the Erzgebirge. On a map, the compact medieval core contrasts with the looser streets that spread along the valley and up the surrounding slopes.
The town has an unusual place in 20th-century history. At the end of the Second World War, the area around Schwarzenberg was left unoccupied for several weeks by both American and Soviet forces. Local residents ran it themselves. This episode, later called the Free Republic of Schwarzenberg, inspired a novel by Stefan Heym.
