Sokolov Map Poster & Print

Sokolov lies on the Ohře river in the Karlovy Vary Region of western Bohemia. From above, the town centre sits along the river, with a château and old streets close to the water and larger housing estates on the surrounding slopes. Beyond the town, the map is dominated by the traces of lignite mining that shaped the region for more than a century.

Formerly known as Falkenau, the town grew with coal mining and industry. Open-cast mines transformed the landscape, and many former pits are now being restored as lakes, forests and recreational areas. The large lake created from the former Medard mine is one of the most visible examples of this transformation.

A Sokolov map poster shows an unusual combination: a historic riverside town surrounded by vast, geometric shapes of former mines, spoil heaps and new bodies of water. The Ohře's curves run through the centre of the composition, while the reclaimed landscape gives the edges a bold, almost abstract quality.
