Songyang lies at the southern foot of Mount Song in central Henan, in the area of Dengfeng, a landscape layered with early religious and scholarly sites. Mount Song is one of the Five Great Mountains of China, and the name Songyang, the sunny side of Song, describes the town's position. On a map the urban streets fill the valley floor while the mountain rises immediately to the north.
The area is known for the Songyang Academy, one of the celebrated academies of classical Chinese learning, which belongs to a group of historic monuments around Dengfeng listed by UNESCO. The Shaolin Temple lies in the same mountain range. These sites sit where the plain begins to climb, and the roads that lead to them trace the first curves of the hills.
