Tosa Map Poster & Print

Tosa is a city on the southern coast of Shikoku in Kochi Prefecture. It lies west of Kochi city and faces the Pacific across Tosa Bay. It shares its name with the old province that covered all of Kochi. On a map the city spreads over a small plain between the sea and steep, forested mountains. The Niyodo river reaches the sea close by.

The built-up area is concentrated on flat land. Streets, railway and main roads line up along the valley, with rice fields in the gaps. Toward the coast the pattern changes: small fishing settlements sit on sheltered inlets and headlands, and the shoreline becomes irregular and rocky. Inland, the mountains cover most of the city's area, with only narrow valleys following the streams.

A Tosa map poster has three distinct zones. A detailed town sits on the plain, a broken coastline faces the Pacific, and dense empty mountains fill much of the frame. The composition is spacious and clearly shaped by the terrain of southern Shikoku.

01

Coastal inlets

Along Tosa Bay, the coast breaks into sheltered coves and harbours between steep headlands. It creates the most intricate lines on the map.

02

Valley plain

The city centre occupies a small, flat plain of streets and farmland between the mountains and the sea. It is where most roads and the railway meet.

03

Shikoku mountains

Steep, wooded mountains fill much of the land behind the city. On the poster they appear as broad, quiet areas cut by narrow river valleys.
