Viveiro sits on the northern coast of Galicia, in the province of Lugo, where the Landro river opens into the Ría de Viveiro. On a map, the town is compact and closely tied to the water. The old quarter rises on a gentle slope above the estuary, and green hills close in behind it.
Parts of the medieval walls survive, including the Puerta de Carlos V, the main gateway into the historic centre. The narrow streets inside form an irregular pattern that is quite different from the newer blocks along the waterfront. Viveiro is also known for its Holy Week processions, which draw visitors from across Galicia.
