Belūr Map Poster & Print
Belūr is a town in Hassan district, Karnataka, on the banks of the Yagachi River. On a map it has a clear centre. The large rectangular enclosure of the Chennakeshava temple sits among a network of streets, and the town extends outward toward the river and the surrounding fields and coconut groves.
The temple was commissioned in the twelfth century under the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana and took about a century to complete. It is known for its intricate soapstone carving. In 2023, together with Halebidu and Somanathapura, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas.
A Belūr map poster centres on the temple's precise rectangle. Around it lie the busier streets of the old town, and beyond are lanes, the curve of the Yagachi and farmland on the Malnad edge. It is a meaningful print for anyone who has stood in that courtyard.
