Hillside old town
Narrow medieval lanes climb the slope in curving lines. They form a compact, irregular knot that looks nothing like the valley streets below.

Gelnhausen Map Poster & Print
Gelnhausen lies in the Kinzig valley in eastern Hesse, between the Spessart and Vogelsberg hills. From above, the old town climbs the slope north of the river in a tight tangle of lanes, while newer districts spread along the valley floor. The river, railway and main roads all run in parallel through the valley.
Emperor Frederick Barbarossa founded the town in the twelfth century and built an imperial palace, the Kaiserpfalz, on an island in the Kinzig. Its ruins survive. Above the half-timbered houses stands the Marienkirche, and the writer Grimmelshausen, author of Simplicissimus, was born here. Locals still call it the Barbarossastadt.
A Gelnhausen map poster shows two cities in one frame. The medieval core is dense and irregular on its hill, and the modern town is looser and longer in the valley below. The Kinzig and the island palace sit between them, which gives the print a clear story.

Kaiserpfalz island
Barbarossa's palace ruins sit on land surrounded by arms of the Kinzig. The river splits and rejoins around the historic site.
Valley corridor
River, rail and road run side by side along the Kinzig valley. Together they draw long parallel lines across the lower part of the map.
