Guidonia Map Poster & Print
Guidonia is part of the comune of Guidonia Montecelio, east of Rome. On a map it's unusual. The town was founded in the late 1930s around an airfield and aeronautical research centre, and its planned streets sit beside the long, open rectangle of the runway. Above it, on a hill, is the much older village of Montecelio, with the compact, curving lanes of a medieval hill town.
The town was named after Alessandro Guidoni, an aviation engineer and general. Its architecture and plan reflect the rationalist style of that period. The surrounding plain has long been known for travertine quarries near Tivoli, and large quarry pits mark the landscape to the east. Today the area has grown into a sizeable suburb of the capital.
A Guidonia map poster captures a rare contrast: an airfield and a 1930s grid below, and an ancient hill town above. The runway gives the design a strong geometric shape, while the quarries and the hill add texture and irregularity.

Rationalist plan
The 1930s town has a planned layout with clear axes. It reads as a more ordered pattern than the growth around it.
Montecelio hill
The old village of Montecelio sits on the hill above, its tight, curving lanes wrapped around the summit. It's a small, dense knot on the map.
