Palm groves
The oasis gardens sit right against the town, an irregular green patchwork that shows how the settlement began and how it still survives.

In Salah Map Poster & Print
In Salah lies in the heart of the Algerian Sahara, in the Tidikelt depression, and has long been one of the hottest inhabited places in Africa. It grew as an oasis and caravan stop. Palm groves were watered through underground channels, and the old buildings were made of reddish earth.
From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets and courtyards next to its palm groves, surrounded by open desert. On the west side, sand dunes have been moving toward the town for years, and their curved edges show up clearly on the map. Roads leave the town in long straight lines across empty ground.
The region also sits over large natural gas reserves, and In Salah drew wide attention in 2015 when residents protested against shale gas drilling. An In Salah map poster frames a desert town drawn in very few lines.

Encroaching dunes
Sand dunes press against the western edge of town, and their soft, curved outlines contrast with the hard lines of streets and walls.
Desert roads
Highways leave town in long straight lines across empty ground, stretching the composition toward the edges of the frame.
