Kartuzy Map Poster & Print
Kartuzy is a town in Pomerania, west of Gdańsk, and the unofficial capital of Kashubia. It lies in the hilly, lake-filled landscape known as Kashubian Switzerland. From above, the town is framed by water: lakes lie close to the centre, and the streets follow the shorelines and the rolling ground between them.
The town takes its name from the Carthusian monks who founded a monastery here in the fourteenth century. Their church survives, with an unusual Baroque roof shaped like a coffin lid, meant as a reminder of mortality. The town is also home to the Kashubian Museum, dedicated to the region's distinct language and culture.
A Kartuzy map poster shows a town defined by lakes and slopes. The water forms broad, smooth shapes around the edges of the centre, the streets bend around them, and the surrounding woods and hills create open space beyond. It is a calm, attractive composition, and a meaningful one for people with Kashubian roots.
