Kasama is the capital of Zambia's Northern Province, on the high plateau between Lake Bangweulu and Lake Tanganyika. From above it appears as a modest, well-defined town. A central area of commercial streets and government buildings is surrounded by residential sections, and main roads lead out into a wide landscape of woodland and farms.
The terrain is gently rolling, with streams draining through shallow valleys and rock outcrops rising here and there. Roads towards Mbala in the north, Mpika in the south and other provincial centres give the map a clear branching structure, with long straight stretches across the plateau between them.
