Kuala Kangsar stands where the Kangsar River joins the Perak River, and the wide, curving river dominates the map. The town sits on its bank. The older centre is compact, while palace grounds, mosque grounds and school campuses occupy large, open parcels along the water. This is the royal town of Perak, home of the Sultan's official palace, the Istana Iskandariah. Nearby is the Ubudiah Mosque, known for its golden onion domes.
