Mabote lies in Lesotho's lowlands, the narrow strip of lower ground along the country's western side where most people live. The area is close to the capital, and on the map it shows as a mix of informal lanes, a few principal roads and plots of open land rather than a formal planned grid.
Lesotho is famous for being entirely above a thousand metres, and even its lowlands sit high. From above, the terrain shows gentle slopes and shallow drainage lines, while the land to the east rises toward the mountains that make up most of the country.
