Mahembe Map Poster & Print
Mahembe lies in Rwanda's Western Province, in the steep country that drops toward Lake Kivu. From above there is little that resembles a conventional town plan. Homes and small clusters of buildings are spread along ridges and slopes, joined by roads and footpaths that bend to follow the contours rather than cutting straight across them.
Rwanda is often called the land of a thousand hills, and this landscape shows why. Valleys fold closely into one another, their slopes worked into fields, and the paths that link homesteads trace the land's shape in fine, looping lines. On paper the result looks almost like a contour drawing.
A Mahembe map poster keeps this organic quality. Instead of a dense centre there is a scatter of settlement, and instead of a grid there is a web of curving routes. It is a quiet, detailed picture of rural Rwanda, and it will mean most to someone who knows exactly which ridge they came from.

Folded valleys
Closely packed valleys between the ridges show up as gaps in the network of paths, giving the poster a strong sense of relief.
Dispersed homesteads
Settlement is spread across the slopes instead of gathered in one core, a pattern typical of Rwanda's hill country.
