Castle town centre
The central streets preserve something of the Edo-period castle town layout, forming a denser, more intricate area at the heart of the map.

Muramatsu Map Poster & Print
Muramatsu lies in Niigata Prefecture, on the eastern edge of the Echigo Plain, where flat rice-growing land gives way to wooded hills. From above, the town has a compact centre with narrow streets, surrounded by residential areas and then a wide, regular pattern of paddy fields crossed by irrigation channels and small roads.
Muramatsu developed as a castle town during the Edo period, and traces of that layout remain in the arrangement of its central streets. In 2006 the town was merged into the city of Gosen, but the name remains in local use and the area still has its own distinct character within the municipality.
A Muramatsu map poster shows the meeting of three landscapes: the old town centre, the geometric paddy fields and the curving contours of the hills. The fields form a fine grid, while the roads leading into the mountains wind more freely. In black and white, those contrasting textures produce a calm and very Japanese composition.

Paddy field grid
Rectangular rice fields and irrigation channels spread across the plain around the town, creating a fine, regular pattern of lines.
Foothill roads
To the east, roads begin to curve into the hills, a looser network that frames the town and marks the edge of the plain.
