Nshamba sits in the rolling uplands of Kagera, in Tanzania's far northwest, a little inland from the western shore of Lake Victoria. On a map the town doesn't follow a grid. Its roads follow the terrain, running along ridges and dropping into shallow valleys, with smaller paths spreading between them like veins in a leaf.
The Kagera region is known for its banana groves and coffee smallholdings, and the countryside around Nshamba is closely settled farmland rather than open bush.
