Olteniţa lies in Călărași County in southern Romania, on the left bank of the Danube where the Argeș river flows into it. From above, the town is shaped by water: the broad Danube runs along its southern edge, the Argeș arrives from the north, and flat floodplain, lakes and farmland spread around the built-up area.
Across the river lies the Bulgarian town of Tutrakan, and a ferry connects the two banks. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years. The prehistoric Gumelnița culture takes its name from an archaeological site near Olteniţa. The town also has a history of shipbuilding and river trade.
