Ponticelli lies on the eastern edge of Naples, on the flat land stretching towards Vesuvius. On the map, it looks like two places side by side: a small historic centre with narrow, irregular streets, and large estates of apartment buildings with wide roads and courtyards around it.
For a long time, Ponticelli was an agricultural village outside the city. It became part of Naples in the 1920s. After the 1980 earthquake, extensive public housing was built here, which changed the scale of the district. Its old core is still recognisable on the map.
