Shumshu Map Poster & Print
Shumshu is the northernmost of the Kuril Islands, in Russia's Sakhalin region. The narrow First Kuril Strait separates it from the southern tip of Kamchatka. Unlike the steep volcanic cones further down the chain, it is fairly low and flat. On a map it forms a compact, rounded shape covered in tundra, lakes and wetland.
In August 1945 the island saw one of the last battles of the Second World War. Soviet forces landed against the Japanese garrison days after Japan had announced its surrender. Tanks, bunkers and other remains of the fighting are still scattered across the landscape, and the battle is well remembered in Russia.
Today very few people live on the island. The town of Severo-Kurilsk is visible across the strait on neighbouring Paramushir. A Shumshu map poster captures a place shaped by wind, sea and history, its quiet outline sitting between Kamchatka to the north and the rest of the Kuril chain to the south.

Low plateau
Most of the island is gently rolling lowland dotted with small lakes and wetlands. This gives the map a soft interior, very different from the volcanic Kurils nearby.
Second Kuril Strait
To the southwest, another narrow strait divides Shumshu from the larger island of Paramushir, with its high volcanoes and the town of Severo-Kurilsk.

အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရှိသော မြေပုံ
It speaks to people with family or military history in the Far East, and to travellers drawn to the edges of the map. The low, rounded shape between two straits makes a calm, unusual print with a strong sense of place.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a date in 1945 or a year of your own, and choose from five styles, among them Noir and Blueprint. The files arrive as 300 DPI PNG and print-ready PDF, with no watermark.
