Slantsy Map Poster & Print
Slantsy lies in the west of Leningrad Oblast, close to the border with Estonia, on the banks of the Plyussa River. Its name comes from the Russian word for shale. The town grew in the twentieth century around the mining of oil shale, which shaped both its economy and its layout.
On the map, the river is the organising line. It loops through the town with residential districts on both banks. Soviet-era planning shows in the straighter streets and larger blocks of apartment housing. The outskirts are looser, with lower buildings, woodland and industrial land connected to the mines.
A Slantsy map poster is a portrait of a working town, without its smokestacks or its weather. In clean black lines the bends of the Plyussa take centre stage. The tidy blocks beside them tell the story of a place built around a single industry and the people who worked in it.

Planned residential blocks
Rows of mid-century apartment buildings appear as regular rectangles, a clear trace of how fast the town grew around shale mining in the Soviet period.
Industrial edges
On the outskirts, the tidy grid breaks into larger plots, rail lines and open ground linked to mining. This is a quieter part of the map, but a distinctive one.
