Tazoult-Lambese lies a short distance southeast of Batna in north-eastern Algeria, on high ground below the Aurès mountains. The modern town has a simple layout of straight streets and blocks that extend along the main road and into farmland. South of town the land rises towards the mountains, and the map opens into fields and dry slopes.
The town grew beside Lambaesis, the base of the Roman Third Legion, Legio III Augusta, in North Africa. The remains of the military camp and the civilian town next to it, including the large praetorium, sit right beside the modern streets. Timgad, another major Roman site in the region, lies further to the east.
