Vazante lies in the northwest of Minas Gerais, in the high, open landscape of the Brazilian cerrado. The town is laid out on a regular grid, compact and orderly, and the map around it is spacious: long straight roads, scattered farm tracks and small watercourses crossing gently rolling ground toward the horizon.
The town is best known for zinc. A large underground zinc mine operates near Vazante and has long been central to the local economy, with the mining area visible on the map as a separate cluster of roads and industrial sites outside the residential grid. Agriculture on the surrounding plateau is the other major presence.
