Valley settlement
The town lies along a valley floor, the only generous stretch of flat ground in the area. Its streets therefore form an elongated band rather than a square grid.

Wangyao Map Poster & Print
Wangyao is a town in the south-east of Gansu Province, in the hilly loess landscape of the upper Wei River basin. From above, the settlement follows a valley floor, where the flat ground leaves room for roads and buildings. On the surrounding slopes, farm tracks and field edges trace the contours of the hills in fine, curving lines.
This part of China lies on the western side of the Loess Plateau, a region of thick windblown soil that has been farmed for thousands of years. Villages and fields follow the shape of the land rather than a grid. As a result, the map is dominated by curving roads, gullies and the stepped edges of agricultural plots.
A Wangyao map poster portrays a settlement shaped entirely by its terrain. The town is a compact band along the valley, with narrow roads branching into side valleys. The hills around it create a textured, almost hand-drawn pattern that holds up well in a minimalist black-and-white print.

Contour-following tracks
On the surrounding slopes, farm roads and field edges follow the contours of the loess hills. They draw fine curving lines that give the map its texture.
Branching gullies
Side valleys and gullies cut into the plateau around Wangyao. The roads that follow them spread out from the town like the branches of a tree.
