Wilsonville sits at the southern edge of the Portland metro area, on the north bank of the Willamette River. Interstate 5 runs straight through town and crosses the river on the Boone Bridge. On the map, the freeway divides the city into two halves, each with its own pattern of curving residential streets, business parks and open space.
The city grew quickly from the 1970s on as a planned community with a mix of housing and employers. It is the southern terminus of the WES commuter rail line to Beaverton. Along the river, parks and green spaces keep the waterfront largely open, and farmland still borders the city to the south and west.
