Akiruno lies at the western edge of Tokyo Metropolis, where the plain meets the mountains. It was formed in 1995 when the towns of Akigawa and Itsukaichi merged. On a map the contrast is striking. Dense residential streets fill the eastern part, and the western half turns into narrow valleys and wooded ridges with only a thread of road through them.
The Aki River, or Akigawa, runs through the city from the mountains toward the Tama River, and its valley shapes the plan. The Itsukaichi Line follows the valley west and ends at Musashi-Itsukaichi station, where the forest begins. The Akigawa gorge is a popular weekend destination for people from central Tokyo.
An Akiruno map poster captures a side of Tokyo that surprises many people, since the capital also contains mountains, gorges and quiet farming hamlets. In black and white the eastern street pattern and the empty western hills balance each other, and the river winds between them.
