From above, Fes shows three distinct cities. Fes el-Bali, the old medina, fills the valley of the Oued Fes. Its thousands of lanes are so narrow and irregular that they look more like a texture than a street network. Fes el-Jdid, founded by the Marinids in the thirteenth century, sits to the west with its palace grounds and walls. Beyond them is the Ville Nouvelle, laid out under the French protectorate.
A Fes map poster makes the contrast obvious. The medina appears almost solid, cut by passages too narrow for cars. It is often described as one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. The Ville Nouvelle next to it is organised around broad, tree-lined avenues and roundabouts, with clear lines and open space.

Nearby, the Chouara tannery is still worked in its stone vats of dye. The medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, and its walls and gates still mark its edges on the map.

Historic walls surround the medina and Fes el-Jdid. Gates such as Bab Boujloud appear as openings where the old city meets the surrounding roads.
