Kannauj lies in Uttar Pradesh on the Ganges plain, near the point where the Kali river flows into the Ganges. On a map the town is a compact mass of narrow, winding lanes, the result of many centuries of continuous settlement. Around it lie fields and the looping, sandy river channels that shift from one monsoon to the next.
In ancient texts Kannauj is called Kanyakubja. In the seventh century it was the capital of King Harsha, and it remained one of the leading cities of northern India for several hundred years after that. Today it is best known for attar, a traditional perfume distilled from flowers and herbs in copper stills, a craft still practised in workshops in the older quarters.
A Kannauj map poster gives shape to that long story: a tight urban core rebuilt many times over, the roads running out toward Kanpur and Farrukhabad, and the broad river country along the Ganges.
