Saint Matthews, usually written St. Matthews, is a small independent city surrounded by Louisville in Jefferson County, Kentucky. It lies a few miles east of downtown, and from above it reads as a mature suburb. Curving, tree-lined residential streets fill most of it, with a few straighter commercial roads and large retail blocks where the main roads meet.
Before the suburbs arrived, the area was farmland, known in the early twentieth century for potatoes grown in its rich soil. After the Second World War it grew into one of Louisville's main shopping districts, anchored by Mall St. Matthews, with Oxmoor Center just along Shelbyville Road. Shelbyville Road and Breckinridge Lane remain the spines of much of daily life.
A Saint Matthews map poster shows how neatly the city fits into the wider metropolitan pattern. Quiet cul-de-sacs, older grid blocks near the historic centre and the curve of the Watterson Expressway along its edge make a detailed, balanced composition.
