Schwalmstadt in northern Hesse was formed in 1970 when the towns of Treysa and Ziegenhain were merged with surrounding villages. From above it still reads as two distinct places. Treysa's old town sits on higher ground with a tight medieval street pattern, while Ziegenhain lies lower in the Schwalm river valley, built around a former water fortress.
The Ziegenhain fortress is the most unusual shape on the map: a compact, geometric complex once surrounded by moats and water-filled defences. In Treysa, the ruin of the Martinskirche, known locally as the Totenkirche, overlooks the old town. Between the two centres run the river, railway lines and newer residential and commercial districts.
A Schwalmstadt map poster shows this double character clearly, with two dense historic cores linked across the valley. The surrounding Schwalm region is also known for its traditional costume, including the red cap often associated with the story of Little Red Riding Hood.
