Shali old town
The ruined mud-and-salt fortress of Shali sits at the centre of the modern town. Its tight, irregular footprint stands out clearly from the looser blocks and roads that grew up around it.

Sīwah Map Poster & Print
Sīwah lies deep in Egypt's Western Desert near the Libyan border, in a long depression below sea level. On a map the oasis is a narrow band of cultivation between salt lakes, with the town at its centre and palm and olive groves spreading outward in irregular plots. Beyond them the lines almost stop, and open desert takes over the page, leaving the settlement surrounded by blank space.
At the heart of town stand the ruins of Shali, a fortress built of kershef, a mix of salt and mud. Its crumbling walls still shape the streets around it. A few kilometres east, at Aghurmi, is the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, which Alexander the Great famously visited in 331 BC. Siwi, a Berber language, is still widely spoken in the oasis today.
A Sīwah map poster captures an unusual contrast: dense, winding lanes around the old citadel, soft-edged lakes on either side, and a vast blank surround that makes the settlement feel like an island. This is a place where the empty space on the paper matters as much as the drawn lines, and the result is a strikingly quiet, open composition.

Salt lakes
Large shallow salt lakes frame the oasis on either side. On the map their smooth shorelines contrast with the busy mosaic of gardens and irrigation channels between them.
Palm and olive groves
Countless small walled gardens, watered by natural springs, form a fine grid of plots around town. They are the working heart of an oasis known for its dates and olives.
