Trāl lies in Pulwama district on the eastern side of the Kashmir Valley, where flat farmland starts to rise toward forested ridges. On a map the town is a tight knot of lanes around its market. Roads branch out from it toward the surrounding villages and the hills. Small streams run down from the higher ground and wind between the fields, adding fine, wandering lines to the drawing.
Much of the land around the town is orchards and farmed plots, so the built-up area stays compact and clearly outlined. Beyond it, terraces and tracks follow the ground and mark where the valley turns into slope. The result is a map with a dense centre and a quiet, open surround, which works well in black and white.
